The Winter Garden, 1-5 April 2001. See "At the Winter Garden, the rebuilding begins," by Glenn Collins, NYTimes, 22 March 2002. At bottom, an NYPD cutter (behind it, on the horizon, Ellis Island flanked by the Statue of Liberty and the old train station in Liberty State Park [New Jersey] converted to a cultural center) tied up in what I'd rather think of as the ketch Rebecca's slip at North Cove Marina, where the adjacent photo was shot from. (Digital Ink, Varick Street at Vandam, has in its windows a wonderful aerial panoramic of much of downtown before the attack [detail, left] that it's selling to benefit the Red Cross; Rebecca is quite recognizable in the adjacent slip at North Cove.) World Financial Center buildings are in partial use and a few restaurants are open as reconstruction proceeds. After seeing the notice that the Winter Garden was one of the structures that rescue workers were forbidden to enter I believed for a few weeks that it had been damaged beyond repair, so this reconstruction is especially gratifying to me.
